If there’s one thing for sure, NeoCon has always served its purpose as an annual gathering and networking event for manufacturers, dealers, architects, designers, end-users, design organizations and media in the commercial design world since its launch in 1969. This year’s attendees were blessed with over eight floors of showrooms to see the latest and trendiest furniture solutions and designs. Though NeoCon is not quintessentially Italian like most of our distributor brands, that did not stop our distributor brands from showcasing and contributing in the international commercial design fair that happened from 11 to 13 June. The event also celebrated its 51st edition in Furniture, Lighting & Decor’s backyard, Chicago, US.
NeoCon 2019 is a much-anticipated event for the commercial design industry, where international furniture brands get to showcase their newest products and designers can take advantage of educational seminars and networking opportunities. The prestigious event featured our distributor furniture brands such as Blå Station, Pedrali, Buzzi Space, Boss Design and Humanscale. Besides the familiar yet excitingly fresh fixtures in colorful showrooms around the design fair, NeoCon 2019 brings about many new trends and innovative debuts.
Noise Reduction & Privacy In Spaces
It is proven that acoustics in an office matter. Good acoustic design absorbs excess noise to enhance communication between teams, reduce disturbance from unwanted speech, improve speech privacy for private phone calls and enable employees to focus better on complex, concentrated tasks. Nowadays, acoustics are adapted to create a variety of work spaces, breakout zones, pantry areas and meeting rooms with the right level of acoustic absorption where occupants can talk and work without having to raise their voices to be heard or whisper quietly to avoid being indiscreet.
Buzzi Bracks (Winner in the category Workplace: Furniture Systems)
Among other brilliant displays from BuzziSpace (Buzzi Table and Buzzi Bracks), NeoCon2019 shone the spotlight on the latest innovation, Buzzi Dish. Buzzi Dish is a new series of upholstered 3D acoustic wall and ceiling panels featuring rotating capabilities. Designed by first-time BuzziSpace collaborator Jeffrey Huyghe, BuzziDish is unique for its playful, rebellious character and distinct parabolic, concave appearance reminiscent of a satellite dish.
Adapted from Buzzi Space’s website: A study by the Center for Built Environment at the University of California Berkeley reveals that more than 50% of employees think that poor acoustics interfere with their daily work and ability to get their job done. Another UK study reports that 3 in 10 employees frequently lose their concentration due to chatter and buzz in the work space.

People Love Ergonomic Wellbeing
Employee wellbeing is becoming the most significant considerations in workplace planning and design. Naturally, companies are widening the scope when it comes to planning and designing. After consolidating views from HR departments and wellness program stakeholders, it is a rounding response that a well workplace is a healthy workplace. Above that, it is reported that healthier workplaces have a positive impact on the financial bottom line. More companies now realize that it is not only the right thing to do as a matter of corporate social responsibility, but it is a feature that potential employees look for. Furthermore, more research studies on the correlation between the physical workplace environment and employee physical and mental health will be forthcoming and will influence how designers approach workplace design.
In response to the ergonomic trend unfolding this year, Humanscale comes to NeoCon 2019 with a promising range of ergonomic workspace solutions and thoughtful programming that highlights the company’s commitment to simplicity, functionality, longevity and materiality. Humanscale’s latest introductions propel the brand into new commercial categories including guest, multipurpose and executive seating.
The brand gave NeoCon attendees a sneak peek at Alto, its new collaboration with designer Don Chadwick. Available in 2020, the stool carries on Humanscale’s core values of encouraging human movement while allowing the brand to reach a new market within office and residential spaces. Its distinct stance provides stability while its contoured while its flexible shell allows for the user to sit comfortably and in a more ergonomic position, alleviating stress on the back of the thighs. The design’s anatomically shaped seat shell plays off the forms of the bow-shaped support and angular leg structure to create a harmonious balance of hard and soft shapes.
Humanscale also took this opportunity to highlight its leadership in task seating, celebrating 20 years of its iconic Freedom chair designed by Niels Diffrient. This celebration was also meant to honour the legacy of the long-time design partner. Designed by Diffrient in 1999, Freedom revolutionized the seating industry as the first ever self-adjusting chair. Twenty years later it remains the gold standard and is revered for its elegant simplicity, functionality and timeless design. The renowned chair is on a world tour, making monthly appearances in cities and important events around the globe, including NeoCon in Chicago. As the first chair to adapt to real people and real movement, these activation gave trade and consumers the opportunity to personally experience and celebrate Freedom’s intuitive ergonomic design during the fair.
Contract X Colour X Comfort
NeoCon 2019 brought emphasis to an important synthesis for contract furniture solutions which is seen increasingly in contract projects. Alongside the trend for the perfect ergonomic work places, office projects are leaning towards a more contemporary and almost hospitality style. This was seen greatly in some of our contract brands including Blå Station, Boss Design & Pedrali.
One of the more exciting happenings this NeoCon would include the entrance of Pedrali in the design fair. This year saw premium Italian design brand Pedrali’s first appearance at NeoCon with the aim to highlight its capabilities as a producer of cutting-edge contract furniture to the US market.

Modern co-working spaces nowadays require dynamic furniture solutions that are able to meet the constant need for change. The Ypsilon tilting by Jorge Pensi, is a stackable table with wheels and tilting top, which can be moved and stored away when not in use. With state-of-the-art cutting-edge technology, it highlights Pedrali’s attention to details and high-tech elements. To complete this ideal co-working space setting, Tweet seating collection by Marc Sadler, proposed with different frames and finishes, underlines the production capacity of the company and its great possibility to customise the products.
